Preview: Day 4 of Tsinghua Global Summer School (GSS) 2020

In this peculiar year due to the pandemic, Tsinghua University is hosting a unique online Global Summer School (GSS) 2020 from July 20th to 28th, themed Toward a Post-Pandemic World. Bringing together Tsinghua’s top-quality educational resources and well-known domestic and international professors through lectures, webinars, and interactive tours, and performances, GSS will delve into our post-pandemic world from a variety of topics, including economics, politics, society, education, climate change, and leadership. Tsinghua GSS welcomes students from different disciplines to join us on a journey to discover the opportunities and challenges for our post-pandemic world and to explore solutions for a sustainable future.

So, let’s have a peek at what will be on the GSS agenda for Day 4!

Day 4: Sustainable development post-pandemic

Host and Academic Support for Day 4: School of Environment and the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate.

On Day 4, we will learn about the key issues of climate change and China’s climate governance. Opened by Minister XIE Zhenhua, President of the Institute of Climate Change and Sustainable Development (ICCSD) at Tsinghua University. Minister XIE was a former administrator of the National Environmental Protection Agency of China, Minister of the State Environmental Protection Administration, and Vice-Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission. From 2015 to 2019, he acted as the Special Representative for Climate Change Affairs of China and has been responsible for various environmental topics such as energy conservation, emission mitigation, and climate change affairs. He has made significant contributions to environmental development in China and to global climate governance.

Minister XIE Zhenhua

We are honored to welcome Professor Laurence Tubiana to give a keynote speech to share her perspectives from her role as CEO of the European Climate Foundation (ECF). Her speech will focus on European Climate Policy and green recovery in our post-pandemic world. Professor Tubiana currently acts as the CEO of the European Climate Foundation (ECF) and chairs the Board of Governors at the French Development Agency (AFD), bringing decades of expertise and experience from her work with governments, think-tanks, NGOs and academia. Before founding the ECF, Professor Tubiana was France’s Climate Change Ambassador and Special Representative for COP21, and a key architect who helped develop the Paris Agreement. Following that, she was also appointed by the UN as the High-Level Champion for Climate Action.

What about environmental protection initiatives such as low carbon energy and air pollution control on the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda? To discuss these topics and more we are delighted to have Professor Michael B. McElroy and Professor HE Kebin join us for an interactive webinar: Sustainability post-pandemic.

Professor McElroy is a Gilbert Butler Professor of Environmental Studies at Harvard University. He is the Faculty Chair for the Harvard-China Project on Energy, Economy, and Environment, a collaborative project with colleagues in China for more than 20 years. He is also the author of more than 250 journal articles, with 30 or more published in Nature and Science. Professor McElroy is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geophysical Union, and the Royal Irish Academy of Arts and Science.

Professor Michael B. McElroy

Professor HE is a Cheung Kong Professor of Environmental Engineering at Tsinghua University. In 2015, he was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, recognizing his research on air pollution control for more than 30 years. His research was implemented in the national action plan on acid rain and PM2.5 pollution control, which includes establishing a new approach for source apportionment of integrating emission, observation and simulation, and the development of a dynamic assessment model for air pollution control solutions.


Professor HE Kebin

Are you craving for some basic knowledge on the latest developments on climate change scientific research and the global process of addressing this threat? Exchange your thoughts and ideas with Associate Professor TENG Fei in our workshop titled: Climate change: science, economics and ethics. Professor TENG is the Deputy Director of the Institute of Energy, Environment and Economy at Tsinghua University. He also acts as the Deputy Director for the Tsinghua-Berkeley Joint Research Center on Energy and Climate. Associate Professor TENG’s research focuses include energy and climate policy analysis using modeling tools and international climate regime.
