UN Resident Coordinator in China visits Tsinghua

Siddharth Chatterjee, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in China, visited Tsinghua University on April 2 and met Tsinghua Vice President and Provost Yang Bin. The two sides reviewed their existing relationship and discussed more possibilities for cooperation in the future.

During the meeting, Yang congratulated Chatterjee on his appointment as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in China and welcomed his first visit to Tsinghua University.

Yang introduced the efforts and achievements of Tsinghua University to solve global challenges arising from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in recent years.

Yang said that Tsinghua has maintained close exchanges with the United Nations and its specialized agencies for a long time, and has carried out important cooperation and achieved tangible results in student internships, joint training, academic research and many other fields.

"2021 marks the 110th anniversary of the founding of Tsinghua University. Standing at a new historical starting point, Tsinghua is willing to establish a closer and firmer partnership with the United Nations and its specialized agencies, shoulder more global responsibilities, and jointly promote global development and prosperity, "said Yang.

Chatterjee pointed out that mankind is facing various major challenges. The issue of climate change in particular has a profound impact on the survival and development of human beings. He is very pleased to learn that Tsinghua has carried out effective education in the fields of green development, environmental protection and governance.

Chatterjee added that he looks forward to working with Tsinghua and other world-class universities to expand joint training and joint scientific research in various disciplines and to promote high-quality multilateral cooperation and the sustainable development of the world.

After the meeting, Chatterjee had an in-depth exchange with Dr Margaret Chan,the inaugural Dean of Tsinghua University Vanke School of Public Health and Emeritus Director-General of WHO, and visited Tsinghua's Fundamental Industry Training Center and Art Museum.
