The 12th Tsinghua University Creative Contest for freshmen was held from October 3 to 6.
The Tsinghua University Creative Contest aimed to further unleash the creative potential of students and encourage them to capture inspiration, come up with creative ideas, take part in practical activities and showcase the image of Tsinghua University. This year’s sub-competition for freshmen was designed to provide them with a platform to exchange and demonstrate their talent in sci-tech innovation and embark on a journey of sci-tech innovation.
Zeng Rong, vice-president of Tsinghua University, visited the competition sites. Teachers from Tsinghua X-lab, the Fundamental Industry Training Center, the Office of Technology Transfer, the schools and departments at Tsinghua University acted as judges in relevant competition programs.
Zeng held in-depth exchanges with contestants, hailed their creative products, and gave them advice on career development. He said that it is of great importance for students to figure out what they would like to do, take part in valuable activities, and make full use of personal talent instead of merely focusing on what they are capable of doing.
The competition consisted of five tracks themed on healthcare, sustainable community and urban development, arts, culture and sports, information technology, and campus optimization. Each track awarded the top three contestants.
The preliminary competition, which was held on October 3, drew the attendance of over 300 students. Contestants put forward their creative solutions to pragmatic problems and established 28 sets of exhibition panels at the sites.
There was an environmental design made of chopsticks and straws; some contestants used biological sensing technology to promote the recycling of facial masks; other participants anticipated the development trend of AR glasses and drew inspiration from laundry.
The final of the competition was livestreamed at the School of Economics and Management and attended by over 300 people in person and via video link. After reviewing, a total of 15 projects won the awards.
Huang Jiawei, from the School of Architecture, won the golden award for the utilization of the internet of things (IOTs) in the scanning and diagnosis of motor faults.
"I have deeply realized the strength of teamwork and the happiness of innovation in the midst of idea generation, plan refinement and poster design. The contest has helped me acquire more knowledge, expand my horizons and strengthen capacity building in the accessibility of information," said Huang Xiaobin, a freshman from the Department of Engineering Physics.
Kou Zhehao, a freshman from Xingjian College, said that he has become more willing to conduct observations of everything around him and hold exchanges with friends over common topics, after participating in the competition.
