On April 1, the unveiling ceremony of the Tsinghua University - Sinopharm Joint Research Institute was held at Tsinghua.
Li Luming, Tsinghua president and chairman of the Joint Research Institute Management Committee; and Liu Jingzhen, secretary of the CPC Sinopharm Committee, Sinopharm chairman, and chairman of the Joint Research Institute Management Committee, addressed the ceremony.
Zhao Bingxiang, deputy secretary of the CPC Sinopharm Committee and Sinopharm general manager; Deng Jindong and Dong Zenghe, members of the CPC Sinopharm Committee and Sinopharm deputy general managers attended the ceremony. Tsinghua Vice President Wang Hongwei presided over the event. Following the ceremony, the Joint Research Institute held its first Management Committee meeting.
Li Luming addresses the ceremony
Li expressed gratitude on behalf of Tsinghua for the longstanding support of Sinopharm to the University. He said, General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized that it is essential to keep the lifeline of the biomedical industry firmly in China's own hands. Tsinghua University has a solid foundation in scientific research and multidisciplinary advantages, while Sinopharm is a leading enterprise in China's pharmaceutical industry. The establishment of the Joint Research Institute by both sides is an important measure to meet China's strategic needs on the health and safety of the people and further deepen cooperation and seek development together.
He hopes that in the future, both sides will take the Joint Research Institute as a platform, fully leverage the comprehensive advantages of the University in science, technology, and talent, as well as the unique advantages of enterprise technology, equipment, and resources, actively explore collaborative innovation mechanisms between academia, industry and research institutions, and generate more forward-looking and pioneering original achievements, making new and greater contributions to promoting the construction of a healthy China and the high-quality development of the pharmaceutical industry.

Liu remarked that the establishment of the Joint Research Institute by Sinopharm with a leading domestic university for the first time signifies a new paradigm of deep integration between academia, industry and research institutions. This initiative reflects a strategic move by Tsinghua and Sinopharm to implement the Party Central Committee's decisions and plans, jointly forging a high-level national innovation platform, and assuming a pivotal role as a significant participant and influencer in the global biopharmaceutical industry.

During the ceremony, Li and Liu together unveiled the Joint Research Institute.
Following the ceremony, the Joint Research Institute held its first Management Committee meeting.
In his address, Li articulated four aspirations for the future advancement of the Joint Research Institute: Firstly, to focus on the country's top priorities and heighten insight into China's major needs. Secondly, to intensify a forward-looking and systemic manner, refining pivotal scientific issues and fostering original innovation. Thirdly, to prioritize long-term perspectives and establish a robust foundation, conducting genuinely valuable scientific research. Lastly, to maintain an open mindset and strengthen international scientific exchange and collaboration.
In his speech, Liu expressed his hope to collaborate with Tsinghua to establish the Joint Research Institute as a landmark and exemplary model between academia, industry and research institutions collaboration and innovation. He emphasized the importance of delivering tangible innovative outcomes to benefit the general public and making a meaningful contribution to the implementation of the Healthy China strategy.
The meeting also announced the members of the Joint Research Institute Management Committee and institutional members, reviewed the charter and the annual work plan. During the meeting, management committee members discussed topics such as further leveraging the complementary advantages of university-enterprise resources, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and technology transfer, and actively exploring new paradigms of cooperation.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by officials from Sinopharm Group, CNBG, China State Institute of Pharmaceutical Industry Co.,Ltd., China Traditional Chinese Medicine Holdings Co. Limited, Shanghai Shyndec Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., as well as representatives from Sinopharm's Comprehensive Management and Technology Innovation Departments. Representatives from Tsinghua University's School of Medicine, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Research & Development Affairs Office, and Office of Domestic Cooperation also participated. Members of the Joint Research Institute Management Committee attended the meeting, while some guests were present as observers.
