Areas of Research Interests/ Research Projects

Areas of Research Interests

1. Disinfection, disinfection by-products and precursor
2. Technology and management for emergency water treatment
3. Water quality problem and control in drinking water distribution system

Research Projects

The water supply in China is still facing some severe challenges. Among these challenges, the high concentration of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in tap water and the frequent chemical spill accidents in source water are quite prominent. Dr Chen focuses his work on the chemical risk control of drinking water quality, especially on DBP control, the emergency response to echo the national demands for safe water and the frontier of international academia.
During the past two decades, the following accomplishments have been obtained:

(1) Development of DBP precursor analysis and control technology for emerging disinfection by-products, especially on nitrosamines.
The major precursors of DBPs in China, including trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAAs) (Sci. Tot. Environ., 2008), and nitrosamines (Water Res., 2015), have been identified. It was found that there is fairly high risk of nitrosamines, one emerging DBPs in the drinking water in China (Water Res., 2016), which has attracted much attention in China. The nitrosamine precursor analysis based on the Polar Rapid Analysis Method (PRAM) was developed (Water Res., 2014), which revealed the basic structure of nitrosamine precursors of both positively charge and non-polarity. This method is expected to become a universal research tool. Based on the results of precursor analysis, it was determined that ozone-granular or biological activated carbon is the best available technology at the present stage, which can simultaneously control THMs, HAAs and nitrosamines (Sci. Tot. Environ., 2007, 2013; J. AWWA, 2014; 2015; 2017). Based on PRAM tool, the mechanism of DBP precursor removal by different processes was revealed (Water Res., 2015). The process and mechanism of nitrosamine precursors by biodegradation was also investigated (Chemosphere, 2015). The sequential chlorination process was developed to achieve the simultaneous control of microorganism as well as DBPs such as THMs, HAAs and nitrosamines (Biomed. & Environ. Sci., 2006, 2007; J. AWWA, 2017; Sep. & Purif. Tech., 2018). The nitrosamine precursor treatment and concentration tool for analysis based on cation exchange technology were first developed (J. Env. Sci., 2017). The black and odorous water was found to be an important source of nitrosamine precursors (Chemosphere, 2016). These achievements are very helpful to address the concern of DBPs (Accounts Chem. Res., 2019).
(2) Established the emergency water treatment technologies to address the chemical spill accidents in water source.
Dr Chen established a comprehensive technologies for urban water supply emergency treatment with the cooperation with Professor Xiaojian Zhang. Six key technologies including activated carbon adsorption, chemical precipitation, oxidation/reduction, enhanced disinfection, aeration stripping and algae treatment were developed which can cover almost all regulated drinking water contaminants (Environ. Sci. & Technol., 2011; Accounts Chem. Res., 2019). They obtained the adsorption characteristics of activated carbon (AC) for over sixty organic pollutants; developed the chemical precipitation technology to deal with heavy metals; developed the aeration stripping technology for the volatile pollutants; set up the models to predict the removal of organic matter by AC adsorption and aeration stripping performance of (SAR & QSAR in Environ. Res. 2015; J. Environ. Sci., 2016). They also developed some key equipment such as the pilot water treatment plant and the mobile emergency reagent addition system. The release mechanism of thiol sulfide odorous substances in the process of algae death was studied, which provided important clues for determining cause of the water crisis in Taihu Lake (J. Hat. Mat., 2010). Major breakthrough was obtained in the comprehensiveness of emergency treatment technology, the coverage of contaminants, the rapid and high-efficient application and stability of process implementation. Dr Chen has devoted himself in the emergency response work in several important accidents, including the Songhua River nitrobenzene pollution in 2005, the Wuxi Taihu Water Crisis in 2007, the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, the 2012 Longjiang River cadmium pollution in 2014, the tap water with benzene cocnentration exceeded the standard’s in  Lanzhou in 2014, the Tianjin Port explosion accident in 2015, and the emergency response for water supply in Guangyuan in 2015, the Henan Nanyang Qihe pollution and other big incidents of emergency work. He has served as a member of expert team for the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Construction or the Ministry of Environmental Protection for several times to help address the accidents.
