Industrial Ecology is an emerging discipline that studies the interaction between industrial development and resources and the environment. It aims to reveal the process, pattern, and effect of material flow, energy flow, and corresponding environmental footprint between an industrial system and a natural ecosystem. Through the process and pattern, it explores the relationship of technological, economic, social, and ecological elements in the evolution of the industrial system and it can also study the key issues and solutions for the ecological transformation and sustainable development. Globally, the development of a circular economy has been well promoted worldwide and has been defined as a necessary action to enhance a country’s global competitiveness and promote sustainable economic growth. China has identified the circular economy as a significant strategic decision as well. Industrial Ecology is an introductory course to study sustainable development and circular economy. This course covers concepts, methods, and diversified practice cases of industrial ecology. Students will expect to see critical methods and ideas of industrial ecology, such as cleaner production, life cycle assessment, material flow analysis, decoupling development, sustainable water management, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and industrial structure optimization. Industrial symbiosis and eco-industrial parks are the most critical two practical cases of industrial ecology and circular economy that students expect to see in this course. By analyzing and understanding national and international practical cases, students will comprehensively understand the fundamental concepts of industrial ecology, such as cleaner production, life cycle assessment, and low-carbon circular development. This course will also offer seminars to help students understand the key concepts and methods mentioned above from different perspectives so that students can apply the knowledge to actual cases happening in the world after completing this course.
