Sustainable development stems from environmental protection and has now become the overall strategy guiding economic and social development in many countries around the world. It is a huge shift in the way mankind produces and consumes as a result of increased awareness of environmental issues, and a fundamental shift in human development strategies. In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development published the report "Our Common Future", defining sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their needs." The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, adopted the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, Agenda 21 and other documents with sustainable development at their core. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was officially launched on 1 January 2016.

This course will start with the concept, origins, connotations and indicators of sustainable development. Subsequently, this course will introduce the pressures and challenges faced by China in terms of resources and the environment, as well as sustainable development strategies and implementation, then introduce the latest research and development frontiers. Through classroom discussions, students are guided to further understand the global sustainable development system, its status, issues, hotspots and its development trends, and to improve their comprehensive decision-making skills with a view to better solve international environmental issues and promote green development.
