The Paper on Green Infrastructure in China Co-authored by Professor Jia Haifeng and PhD Student Yin Dingkun from the School of Environment was Included in the Oxford Research Encyclopedias

On August 31, the paper titled “Green Infrastructure for Stormwater Runoff Control in China”, co-authored by Professor Jia Haifeng and PhD student Yin Dingkun from the School of Environment, was included in the Oxford Research Encyclopedias of Environmental Science.

In recent years, China has been working on the protection of its urban water environment through ecological construction. To solve urban stormwater problems and pursue urban sustainable development, the focus is to build the Sponge City (SPC) which is an approach that considers many issues including water ecology, public safety, and environmental protection. As the key to the construction of SPC, green infrastructure (GI), if well-planned and arranged, can effectively store rainwater runoff, reduce runoff pollutant load, and relieve the drainage pressure of municipal pipe network. The paper reviews the development of GI in SPC by looking at its planning and construction, classification, monitoring and evaluation, and long-term operation and maintenance. The paper also emphasizes on the comprehensive construction of multi-objective stormwater drainage and flood mitigation systems and the combination of GI with traditional gray infrastructure, which provide implications and support for the development of SPC in China.

The Oxford Research Encyclopedias (ORE) is a collection of invited, full-length reviews papers only. These papers would undergo reviews and edits from leading scholars and experts in the field before being published. A wide range of fundamental and cutting-edge topics are covered in the ORE, for it aims to keep disseminating fundamental knowledge in key research areas in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The ORE has collected papers by scholars from more than 80 countries.
