The 15th National Environmental Conference for Doctoral Students and the 649th Tsinghua University Doctoral Forum was successfully held both online and offline from October 22nd to 25th. The conference was jointly hosted by Tsinghua University, Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences (Environmental Education Committee), Young Scientists’ Association of Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences and State Key Joint Laboratory of Environment Simulation and Pollution Control, and co-organized by Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology (XUAT) and Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering (Journal). Adhering to the purpose of “academic exchange towards innovation, wide accumulation towards great ideas”, the conference was themed “New Theories and New Technology of Environmental Science and Engineering”. It has been actively serving as a high-level academic platform for PhD students from environmental sciences and related disciplines.
The conference included two keynote speeches in the plenary session, eight keynote speeches in the parallel sessions, 228 oral presentations in 22 parallel sessions and 134 poster presentations. Distinguished guests were invited to share their academic insights and answer students’ questions, including Professor He Kebin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as Professor Ouyang Zhiyun and outstanding young and middle-aged scholars in various disciplines. The conference attracted paper submission by postgraduate students from 82 well-known universities or research institutions at home and abroad, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University and Technical University of Denmark (TUD). The attendees conducted in-depth exchanges on seven major topics, including Water Pollution Control and Recycling; Air Pollution and Control; Solid Waste Pollution Control and Recycling; Environmental Economics, Management and Policy; Environmental Chemistry; Environmental and Ecological Health, and Implementation Pathways, Mechanisms and Policies for CO2 Emissions Peak and Carbon Neutrality. As a response to the national double carbon goal, the conference set up a special session on “Implementation Pathways, Mechanisms and Policies for CO2 Emissions Peak and Carbon Neutrality” to probe into major national strategies, including carbon peak and carbon neutrality, synergy between pollution abatement and carbon mitigation, global climate response and governance, energy storage and renewable energy utilization.
The attendees of each parallel session and the judges of the Organizing Committee have jointly selected winners for five awards. Chen Xunfeng from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Ye Rong from Tsinghua University, and Xu Mingyi from TUD won the “Future Scientist Award”; three students including Wang Bin from Nanjing University won the Outstanding Oral Presentation Award; seven students including Shi Lingdong from Zhejiang University won the Excellent Oral Presentation Award; three students including Zheng Huiqi from XUAT won the Outstanding Poster Presentation Award; six students including Cui Xuyang from Tianjin University won the Excellent Poster Presentation Award.
The 15th National Environmental Conference for Doctoral Students innovated the way of publicity and improved its university contact system. It also established a strict “review-feedback-second review” mechanism by firmly upholding the principle of “setting high standards, pursuing high quality and achieving high level”, The conference was held both online and offline, where offline participation channels was available to representatives from universities in Beijing. With improved management and evaluation mechanism for online oral presentations and poster presentations, and with widened channels and better management for sitting in on the conference, the conference has achieved its goal as a platform for doctoral students to exchange ideas, make progress together, and gain valuable experience.
