In the early summer, the farewell song is played. On the morning of June 24th, the Commencement Ceremony 2022 of School of Environment was held grandly on the outdoor platform of the Sino-Italian Ecological and Energy Efficient Building. The ceremony was especially broadcast online for teachers, students, and their relatives who could not attend in person. Except the members of the class of 2022, more than 100 guests attended the ceremony, including SOE Dean Liu Yi, School Council Chairman Liu Shuming, Graduate School Deputy Dean Wu Ye, SOE Vice Deans Yue Dongbei, Jiang Jingkun, and Lan Huachun, as well as School Council Vice Chairmen Wu Jing and Xi Jinying. Alumni representative Feng Xu, departments directors, teacher and counselor representatives of the class of 2022, and some administrative staff were also in attendance. The ceremony was hosted by Xi Jinying.

At the beginning, Yue Dongbei, Vice Dean of the School, briefed the graduation and degree conferral of 81 undergraduates, 128 postgraduates, and 77 doctoral students of the School of Environment in 2022. After that, Liu Shuming announced the SOE list of outstanding graduates to be honored in the 2021-2022 academic year, calling on all graduates to grow into “high-quality, high-level, versatile, and creative” talents in the field of environmental protection.

Hu Yaoyue, on behalf of the graduating undergraduates, delivered a speech. After recalling the journey they got to know themselves and developed their personalities, as well as the beautiful youth they spent working together and growing together in the collective, she pledged to have the feet firmly on the ground and shoulder corresponding responsibility, continuing to write vivid chapter with practical actions. Gao Yifan spoke on behalf of graduating doctoral students of the Class of 2022. He expressed his gratitude for the School’s deep patriotism, strong research atmosphere, and meticulous care, and called on all graduates to jointly inherit the spirit of the School, making the world more beautiful with their efforts.

Jia Haifeng sent a message to the graduating students on behalf of the teachers in charge of Undergraduate Class 2022. He reviewed the employment and working life of research group students, and encouraged everyone to forge ahead and seize opportunities while maintain a positive attitude and face setbacks actively. He hoped that the graduating students could gain wisdom from their setbacks and maintain their passion for life.

Feng Xu, a 2014 alumnus of the School of Environment and a member of the “Intensive Cultivation Program” Phase I, based on his own experience working in the public service sector, proposed that “slowing down is the essence of life.” He pointed out that “slowing down” means doing challenging things, patiently improving oneself, and doing solid work. He hoped that the graduating students could adhere to lifelong learning, dabble in broader knowledge, calmly and constantly reflect on themselves, remain firm and calm, maintain their own pace, “combine personal choices with national needs,” and promote long-term, sustainable development in a phase of profound national change.

Later, Liu Yi, the Dean of the School of Environment, exchanged gifts with graduating student representatives. He hoped that the students would carry the warmth of the School and continue to practice the concept of green development, while the graduates wished the faculty and students of the School to be full of vitality, continuously climb the academic peak, and work for at least 50 years for the cause of environmental protection in China.
In the concluding speech, Liu Yi warmly congratulated all the graduating students and expressed gratitude to the teachers, parents, and friends who had helped and supported the students to grow and succeed. He fully recognized the excellent qualities and growth of the members of the class of 2022, who made unremitting efforts and pursued excellence, and he looked forward to their greater progress and achievements in their new life journey. He encouraged the students to understand their historical role they will assume and the society they will integrate into, and to better plan their life goals and directions when facing the complex world intertwined with changes and the pandemic. Liu hoped that the students could inherit and carry forward fine traditions of SOE, transform their knowledge into innovative problem-solving abilities to meet the needs of the country and society, strive to become witnesses and promoters of the great green revolution of the era, and make extraordinary achievements in ordinary positions.

At the end of the ceremony, six teacher representatives awarded the graduating students degree certificates and took group photos with them, leaving behind the most unforgettable memories of their learning journey at Tsinghua Garden in June.
