2022 SDG Hackathon HACK 2 Successfully Held at the School of Environment

From July 4 to 10, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Hackathon of Tsinghua Global Summer School (GSS 2022) - “A Healthy Planet for Sustainable Development” was successfully held. The summer school was divided into 11 hacks, with the School of Environment hosting the second hack (HACK 2), themed “Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development.” A total of 79 students from around the world formed 11 teams and gathered online to participate in the HACK 2, completing Tsinghua Summer School coursework and exchanging ideas with scholars from various fields both domestically and internationally.

In Hack 2, Professor Hou Deyi from the School of Environment served as the main lecturer (HACK Leader), with Professors Li Jinhui and Lu Xi as mentors. Four teachers, including Professor Hou Deyi, Associate Professor Huang Jun, Associate Researcher Zeng Xianlai, and Assistant Researcher Chen Zhuo, served as tutors. Associate Professor Cai Wenjia from the Department of Geosciences served as the workshop mentor. Focusing on the theme of “Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development”, GSS students conducted a week-long research project. Zhang Yichen, a student from the Global Environment Program (GEP), served as the student supervisor (HACK Manager), with Shen Liling and Xie Canyang , a student from Global Environment Leadership Program (GELP), as teaching assistants, participating in the planning and organizing of Hack 2.

After three rounds of concentrated presentations and evaluations, the Zero Hunger team’s “Circular Agriculture” proposal was selected as the outstanding HACK 2 proposal, recommended for the GSS 2022 final presentation. The team ultimately stood out among the 11 Hack teams, winning the title of “Outstanding Team” and presenting at the GSS 2022 closing ceremony.

During the seven-day summer school, students gained a deeper understanding of China, Tsinghua University, and the School of Environment through interdisciplinary learning in areas such as economics, social issues, healthcare, education, climate change, and health, as well as master lectures, thematic workshops, SDG Hackathon challenges, and diverse cultural experiences. They also enhanced their teamwork and innovation capabilities for sustainable development. This year marks the third year of Tsinghua University Global Summer School online. Over the past three years, more than 3,000 outstanding young students have participated in the program. Upholding the concept of openness and inclusiveness, Tsinghua Global Summer School has the aim of “independent learning, intelligent teaching, universal schooling, and high-quality educating”, committed to helping young talents worldwide gain a deeper understanding of the world and China in the post-COVID era, encouraging them to cooperate and innovate for achieving Sustainable Development Goals, and contribute to creating a better world.
