The Opening Ceremony 2022 for Postgraduates, School of Environment, Tsinghua University
On the afternoon of September 1, the Opening ceremony 2022 for new postgraduates of the School of Environment, Tsinghua University was held at the East Hall I of the Sino-Italian Ecological and Energy Efficient Building, available online for those who cannot attend in person. The ceremony was chaired by Vice Dean Yue Dongbei. Over 100 new graduate students attended the ceremony in person, while others participated online. Dean Liu Yi, School Council Chairman Liu Shuming, alumni representative Professor Xing Yi, other school leaders, department representatives, and some administrative staff members attended the ceremony.

Professor Xu Ming congratulated the students on embarking on a new chapter in their lives on behalf of the teachers. Drawing on his own research experiences as a postgraduate and the lessons he learned along the way, he gave students practical suggestions regarding work and life, and encouraged students to “cherish curiosity and embrace differences,” “work diligently in the right direction,” and “be willing to take responsibility” in their research career. He hoped that they would strive to become academic masters and industry leaders in China’s environmental sector, as well as talents capable of governing the nation.

Professor Xing Yi, a 1994 alumnus and Dean of the School of Energy and Environmental Engineering at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, advised students to always remember their “roots” and strive for expertise in their respective fields. He reminded them to swiftly adapt to the postgraduate life, effectively manage their time, and maintain active communication with their advisors. Reflecting on his school days more than 20 years ago, he mentioned that the gains from habits and willpower beyond academic knowledge had benefited him from then on. In conclusion, he encouraged everyone to put the SOE motto “Passion for Our Environment, Ambition for Our Cause” into action, and to grow into high-quality talents capable of shouldering the responsibility of national rejuvenation.

Sun Yisheng, a doctoral student of the Class of 2020, gave a speech on behalf on current postgraduates, sharing his experience of participating in the Beijing Winter Olympics, and his social practice and volunteer services in Pingyao, Shanxi. He encouraged everyone to be upright, pay attention to the real world, and care for others. Shakeel Ahmad, a doctoral student of the Class of 2018 and representative of international students, recounted his growth in Pakistan and his study experience at Tsinghua University, expressing his passion and respect for the cause of environmental protection. He hoped that his fellow students would make continuous progress, gain achievements, and thrive on the beautiful Tsinghua campus. Li Yue, the new student representative, said that they new students have prepared themselves to face the unknown challenges in their research journey. They will keep the SOE motto “Passion for Our Environment, Ambition for Our Cause” in mind, uphold Tsinghua University's excellent tradition of “actions speak louder than words”, devote to the cause of environmental protection, and keep abreast with the time.

Dean Liu Yi, in his concluding remarks, warmly welcomed the students who came to study at the School of Environment and congratulated them on becoming new members of SOE famlily through their unremitting efforts, thus becoming the new and young force for ecological and environmental protection. He pointed out that the impact of human activities on the global environment has never been as profound and widespread as it is today, and global and regional environmental changes have deeply affected and will continue to affect the world’s development. He expressed his hope that students would conduct imaginative and creative research and make explorations meaningful and significant for the next 5 to10 years or even longer in response to the practical needs of this issue; proactively face the future of social development, firmly grasp the major trends of national development, closely integrate their personal growth with national and social development, and link their life goals with social responsibilities, striving to become someone who can make a contribution to China and the world.
