Professor Xu Ming of the School of Environment at Tsinghua University was recently invited to join the International Resource Panel (IRP) under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Launched by UNEP in 2007, the International Resource Panel aims to provide global decision-makers with the latest scientific insights and policy recommendations on the extraction and use of natural resources and their environmental impacts, thereby promoting the efficient use of global resources and sustainable development. Bringing together leading experts from around the world, the Panel conducts systematic research and data analysis to comprehensively assess key areas such as raw material extraction, energy consumption, waste management, and the circular economy. By doing so, it highlights the opportunities and challenges that resource utilization presents to the environment and human society. The Panel’s findings not only offer a robust basis for governments and international organizations to formulate more scientific and effective resource management policies but also make a significant contribution to the global transition toward a resource-efficient economic model.

The International Resource Panel currently has 33 members in total, including only one member from China—Professor Zhu Bing, Director of the Institute for Circular Economy and Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University.
